The famine in East Africa is having a devastating effect on communities in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, South Sudan and, particularly, Somalia, which the UN World Food Programme has described as "the epicentre of the famine". Up to 11 million people are believed to be at risk and mothers have been forced to make the "horrifying choice of saving the strongest" children, leaving the weakest behind to die as the family begins the long trek across borders in search of food aid.
"This is not the first horrific food crisis in this region, and the underlying causes must be addressed to prevent it ever happening again. But right now there is an immediate need for emergency relief" says War Child COO, Lorna Read. "War Child stands with its partners and colleagues working on the ground and calls on the governments of wealthier nations to do all they can to bring an end to the terrible suffering."
