C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute has been an exemplary supporter of War Child for the past four years, raising thousands of dollars each year. This past year, with the help from the Jane Finch Mall, the students from C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute surpassed the $10,000 mark for their grand total raised. This places C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute in one of the top spots for War Child high school fundraisers in North America and sets an example for schools, proving that anyone can help make a difference.
Funds are raised as part of the Independent Study Unit in Ms. Greenfield’s World Issues class. The class is divided into groups to research a major world issue. Throughout the project, students run fundraising events, including bake sales, penny drives, and other activities which total up to several thousand dollars for War Child each year!
The project culminates with the World Crisis Conference and Fundraiser where students create a presentation to display their chosen world issues. The World Crisis Conference and Fundraiser is an amazing event. Students hand out pamphlets with information on their issue and spread awareness to other students and attendees. They sell chocolates, doughnuts, samosas, pencils, and anything else that can raise a dollar or more. The determination of the students to raise money is amazing, it is an excellent example of how every penny counts and can add up to help make a huge difference.
